Project Scream is The Center for Integrated Media and viralnet-v4.net’s sound project for 2018-19, curated by Carmina Escobar, Fy, and Tom Leeser. A variety of performance, electronic, acoustic, noise, text, and visual artists have been invited to contemplate the meaning of the word scream and to respond by creating a sonic or written interpretation that is derived from their own personal artistic practice:

Project Scream grows from an interest in producing a response to these precarious times by transforming the scream into a form of wisdom and compassion. An example of this artistic transformation is the wrathful Buddhist deity, Hayagriva, who is depicted in Tibetan thangka painting as using sound in a ferocious form to achieve an enlightened state.

The project will be posted online at viralnet-v4.net and will include an opening reception, listening party and performances.

Tom Leeser is a media artist, educator, curator, and writer. He is Program Director of the Art and Technology Program and Director of the Center for Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). He is an editor and producer for the web-based journal and curatorial project viralnet.net. Tom received his BFA and MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI). His film, video, online work, interactive installations, and public performances have been exhibited at Eyebeam, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Machine Project, the Mount Wilson Observatory, MassMoca, The Santa Monica Museum of Art, The Fowler Museum, Redcat Theater, The Kitchen, The Millennium, Siggraph, and film and video festivals worldwide, with support from Art Matters, Creative Time, and the Daniel Langlois Foundation.

Carmina Escobar is an experimental vocalist from Mexico City who lives and works in Los Angeles, California. She is on the Voice Arts faculty of California Institute of the Arts and is the co-founder of as well as a vocalist in “LIMINAR,” a contemporary music ensemble based out of Mexico City.

Fy is a performer, artist and maker based in Los Angeles. They focus on sound with a practice that spans into and through technology, magic and philosophy. They are the Program Administrator within the Center for Integrated Media at California Institute of the Arts.

The Center for Integrated Media is an interdisciplinary graduate concentration at the California Institute of the Arts that promotes creative experimentation, interdisciplinary media projects, and peer critique.
