A Collaborative Project initiated by Nicolas Grenier, BUILT-IN takes the form of a modular structure with a dynamic and malleable design for presentations, screenings, lectures, performances and other forms of public engagement. The project is, in essence, relational. It is a site-specific design proposition: an ensemble of space dividers that bring attention to the relations between individual elements and collectivity, virtual and physical space, minds and bodies. The objective is to establish an ongoing collaboration between artists, academics and others who are interested in using the structure as a platform to discuss the organization of living beings in physical space — past, present, and possible futures.

Nicolas Grenier received his BFA from Concordia University in 2004, his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2010, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2016. He lives and works in Montreal and Los Angeles, and is represented by Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran and Luis De Jesus Los Angeles. Recent individual and group exhibitions include: Dumbfounded Prophets (Luis de Jesus Los Angeles), Precarious Geographies (Galerie Antoine Ertaskiran), Giles (Gagosian Gallery, Athens), The City And The City (Denny Gallery, New York), Vertically Integrated Socialism (Brugge Triennale 2015, Belgium), Promised Land Template (Biennale de Montréal, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles), Marginal Revolutions (KUAD Gallery, Istanbul), Color Consciousness (Torrance Art Museum), and Corner-Thru (Choi&Lager Gallery, Cologne, and Union gallery, London). His work is present in various public, corporate and private collections, including the Musée Nationale des Beaux-Arts du Québec, The Royal Bank of Canada and the Loto-Québec Collection.
