NAVEL is proud to announce the programming committee for 2019, elected by the collective via an open call.

NAVEL welcomes Gloria Galvez, Jasmine Nyende, Dorit Cypis, Chris Tyler, Daleen Saah, and Yewande Pearse. Read more about them below.
Their season will begin end of March through July 2019.

gloria galvez is Los Angeles based and maintains a life practice that disrupts, subverts, and dismantles bland and oppressive status-quo norms. She is also committed to creating access to physical and abstract spaces of possibility, imagination and self-determination for communities and individuals for whom it’s constantly denied. 
As a 2019 programming committee member, galvez will organize a series of programs that explore Zapatismo/art/technology/futurity and the abolitionist notion of a world without of prisons.

Jasmine Nyende is a new media artist from South Central Los Angeles exploring the field of social memory storage. Through poetry, plays, and experimental performance, she seeks to blur the lines between physical and the digitally mediated social interactions and the need for humans to building relationships. Intimate and daring, she practices radical openness as a political imagination for dialogue surrounding Black, queer, femme and economical vulnerable people in our social media defined time of personal information. Her work revolves around social media and deleted posts, the shame in public memory and the commodification of emotional labor. Her work with sculpture includes hand-sewn dolls of intentions, knitted hanging nests, and rag rugs made from recycled clothes and sheets. Jasmine is currently writing a book of poems entitled Flesh Between Heaven and Earth about family dynamics and runs a radio show on KCHUNG Radio in conjunction with her art & poetry zine entitled Fit Form Function. Jasmine is also lead vocalist for afropunk band Fuck U Pay Us.

Dorit Cypis has explored themes of history, identity, and social relations as an artist, educator and social activator since the late 1970s. Moving fluidly between the studio and the street Cypis’ tools have included performance, photography, and immersive media installation presented in diverse art and cultural contexts nationally and internationally; civic community programs building capacity for generative relations across cultural differences; publication on identity and social relations and curriculum development at colleges/universities. Dorit was a founding member of Mediators Beyond Borders International in 2007 and founded Kulture Klub Collaborative 1992, networking support for artists and home-less youth to bridge survival and inspiration while building self-knowledge and creative citizenship. She earned an MFA, California Institute for the Arts and Masters Dispute Resolution, Pepperdine University. Amongst her many awards are a Guggenheim Fellowship and Rauschenberg Foundation Residency, in 2014. At the core of her work is a guiding question, “who are we to each other?

Chris Tyler is a writer and performing artist examining the intersections of popular culture, collective action and digital identity. Recent projects include Little Red Scare (Bushwig 2018), the Make America series (Ars Nova), Their food tastes better when they see us starving (The Brick), flesh failure (The Civilians’ R&D Group), and TOTAL REJECTS LIVE!!! (Public Theater/Under the Radar Festival). His performance style has been called “equal parts hilarious and chilling” (Fusion), “precise-yet-butchered” (Out Magazine) and “so cute” (Taylor Swift). Daleen Saah is an urban planner and designer based in Los Angeles, California. Through consulting over the past 5 years, she has practiced urban planning, land use planning, GIS and spatial analytics, and data story-telling with heavy focus on graphic design and data visualization. As a designer and futurist, her research and scenario building provides critical thought on multi scale development in the United States, London, Latin America and the Middle East. Currently, Daleen is interested in the advancement of creative programming that welcomes new ways of understanding our city’s ecologies and radically addresses the social and political dimensions of the built environment. As a Palestinian-American, she is equally interested in work that reflects Arab image, identification, and representation. 

Dr Yewande Pearse is a Neuroscientist and Science Communicator. Her research interests focus on rare genetic disorders of the brain, and stem cell therapy. Outside the lab, she writes for Massive, is a TEDMED Research Scholar and hosts a monthly podcast called Sound Science on Dublab radio.
